What is a Suction Hose?

Suction hoses are a specific type of hoses used in operation with water trucks, vacuum trucks or other heavy equipment with vacuum operations. These hoses are specifically built to withstand the forces associated with pulling a vacuum. Being so that they will not collapse in on themselves when being used.

These hoses can be used for liquid, gas or solid applications. Making them effective in industries such as construction, water removal, mining and agriculture.

Two Main Types of Suction Hoses

There are two main types of suction hoses; hard/rigid and flexible. Hard suction hoses are used when pulling in water from below the pump. For example, if you are loading a water truck from a natural body of water, you would use a hard suction hose.

Flexible suction hoses are preferred when transfering a load from most other water sources. This can mean transfering from a water tower, tanker, or another truck. There are flexible hoses rated high enough to pull vacuum when the source is below the pump as well.

Suction Hose Materials

Rubber suction hoses are used in medium-duty applications in industries such as agriculture and construction. These hoses use EPDM rubber, a type of synthetic rubber, as a shell and are commonly reinforced with steel wire. Making them a great multi-function choice for acids and chemicals, or water.

TPU suction hoses are hoses made from thermoplastic polyurethane, a rubber like material, that is lightweight but offers high-strength, elasticity and corrosion resistance. These hoses perform very well at extremely low tempuratures because of their thermoplastic properties. Providing longer service life for colder climates when compared to other materials.

PVC suctions hoses come with many different kinds of reinforcing that allow them to be used as suction hoses. Some feature a spiral pvc pattern around the exterior of the hose, while others use steel wire inside of the hose. Each reinforcement type can alter the performance metrics of the suction hose itself.
